[It's the middle of summer and they're stuck house sitting. Their dad is away for the whole month.... Not really that unusual, he's always away on business. And their mom has been gone for a long while now. So it's just him, in charge of taking care of things, and his brother.

And the heat. Noel flops on the couch next to his little brother and groans, passing over a soda. It's already evening but the heat just doesn't let up. It really saps the strength out of Noel, but what it also does is... Well.

It's difficult being a teenager and gay and alone in a house with your brother who is actually really hot and you absolutely should not find attractive because he's your brother, and so as usual Noel slides his eyes away from his brother quickly after passing him the soda. Dinner was about half an hour ago so there's nothing left to do but sort of melt together in this heat.]

It's too hot to live. Revive me when it's November.

[he's so fucking tense, but he starts his hands moving again, knowing it's not a good idea to leave it half-finished for too long.] What does it look like? And you might wanna let go. I need to be able to move freely.

Sure. [He leans back, stepping back so Rowan can keep at it.] Looks like something out of a superhero cartoon or Harry Potter. Hey, you didnt' go to Hogwarts without telling me about it, right? [He's mostly joking but. Bro. Bro this is some witchcraft all right.]

I think you'd notice if I went to England instead of high school. [he sounds distracted though, most of his focus on laying out the precise lines, slowly circling the house back to where he started. and then stepping back a few feet and starting a distinctly different set of lines in a larger circle. basically they'll be at it for a while.]

[plotluck]

Yeah yeah. But this is magic, right? [He has no idea what Rowan is doing but he's watching avidly.]

[amurdermostfowl]

[he's quiet for a minute or two, and the silence itself is really an answer even as he works meticulously, but...] If you hadn't already pinched yourself I'd be trying to figure out a way to make you think you were dreaming this, come morning. ...But I don't really want to lie to you.

[plotluck]

That's pretty rude. What are you doing? And why haven't you told me about it until now? I'm your brother, you know. [Banging like rabbits aside.]

[amurdermostfowl]

[hhhHHHHHHHHGH] Because I don't like lying to you, but I'd still rather protect you than get you into this shit. I'm just refreshing our defenses. It doesn't need to be relevant past that.

[plotluck]

[Nope now he has more questions.] What shit? And watch your language. What defenses? What exactly is going on, Rowan?

[amurdermostfowl]

[his shoulders are hunching defensively] Doesn't matter. We're safe, so it doesn't matter.

[plotluck]

Obviously it matters or you wouldn't be out here doing this. Finish it and explain this to me.

[amurdermostfowl]

[grits his teeth.] Go inside. I'll be in soon.

[plotluck]

[He doesn't go in but he does fall quiet, just watching Rowan work.]

[amurdermostfowl]

[he seems REALLY FUCKING FUSSED but his work doesn't suffer as a result, and he lays down layer after layer of complicated patterns, ring after ring after ring. if the sheer amount of glowy bullshit he's putting into this is an indicator of threat level, they're in a hell of a lot of danger without it. but eventually he takes the threads in his hands between his teeth, pulls a new pattern between his hands, and it all abruptly goes dark, like there's nothing there at all.]

[plotluck]

[Would be a real shame if Noel distracting him meant some sort of small flaw in that intricate latticework of defenses!! Anyway Noel is quiet until everything goes dark again, and then waits a few beats before speaking up.] You done?

[amurdermostfowl]

[SURE WOULD!! BE A SHAME!! IF THAT HAPPENED!!!

He nods, though, and reaches to take Noel's hand and basically tug him inside wordlessly.]

[plotluck]

[Why the fuck is there so much he doesn't know about his brother?? But he follows along easily, letting Rowan tug him inside and kicking the door closed behind him.]

So you going to talk to me now?

[amurdermostfowl]

I'd honestly rather not. [but that doesn't mean he won't. tugging Noel to the couch and flopping on him. he's so tense.]

[plotluck]

[He settles, draping an arm around Rowan and letting his fingertips settle at the back of his neck, sort of massaging the tension there.] What's going on?

[amurdermostfowl]

[hums, a combination of complaint and also yes please do something about that tension.] Right now? Nothing. I intend to keep it that way.

[plotluck]

Okay so what are you keeping from happening? When did you learn magic? [He'll keep up the rubs though.]

[amurdermostfowl]

I'm self-taught. [that's not a direct answer, you shit.] To put it simply, we're kind of bait. For a lot of magical stuff.

Since when? And why don;t I know about any of this?

Since always. And you don't know because I've kept us safe.
